Help Restore the Greenback Cutthroat Trout

January 3rd, 2014 09:24:00 am

Did you know that there are just 750 greenback cutthroat trout left in the wild?

750.That's it. Colorado's state fish and one of only a handful of native fish that have historically ever lived in Colorado. They all live in one sad little drainage just west of Colorado Springs, called Bear Creek.

A few trusted folks, in conjunction with Colorado Trout Unlimited, have put together a website and video explaining the plight of the fish.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 with a crowd-sourcing plea on indiegogo.com, with an eventual goal of attaining 100k for a bulk of the project to protect and proliferate these fish back into specified historically proper areas.

According to the project, the funds will go towards a few things to help restore Bear Creak, where greenbacks live.

  • Restoring and maintaining the access road next to Bear Creek to prevent further erosion from entering the stream and damaging the habitat for its resident greenback cutthroats.
  • Proliferation of greenbacks through supporting stocking programs and the gear required for our volunteers to successfully pack fish into remote areas.
  • Seed money to leverage larger grants for in-stream restoration projects.

The problem...we're just over halfway there with the initial 10k and only have 5 days left to reach our goal.

Please make a difference for a species that's on the brink of extinction.

Please give and please pass the links below on via Facebook, Twitter, blogs, websites!
